Inspiration, inspiration, inspiration…

Where do you start looking for that all important inspiration, when you are faced with an exciting, yet daunting blank canvas? Prompted by some good friends, who were a little overwhelmed at the thought of refurbishing an eight bedroom house with five children to please, this blog is all about how to find that first great idea.

Frequently, it’s as simple as choosing a key colour, a favourite photo, taking inspiration from nature or a much loved piece of clothing.

This is a photo of my all-time favourite winter version of blue (taken recently in Zell am See by a friend with a better camera than mine – thank you Kato). Wonderful very peaceful and calm blue/greys that could be translated into a great interiors scheme in a south-facing room – note that it’s the brown of the trees that makes the picture, if you translate into a room scheme. The blue/greys don’t work nearly as well on their own, without the freshness of the white or the warmth of the brown. Nature is a great guide in terms of which colours work together!

Anton and K Chairs

I love these chairs from Anton & K. Admittedly more blue, but this time turquoise and contrasting with dark brown mahogany legs.

Relaxed, supremely comfortable, and reminiscent of Paris!

What a great combination and excuse to buy one as a starting point for a scheme.

Fashion

Moving on to images of summer, blue and white is always a winner.  Look to fashion for inspiration to add pattern and texture, this is Erdem’s new 2013 look book.  Again note the browns of the background and add some hot pink for fun.

Take a simple piece of favourite clothing and translate elements of it into a room scheme.

Go for this maxi dress from Anthropologie as your inspiration if you want the room to have some “edge”.
